T. de Géographie

Distance d’un lieu à l’équateur mesurée en degrés sur le méridien. Latitude nord. Latitude sud. Paris est à quarante-huit degrés, cinquante minutes, quatorze secondes de latitude nord.

Il se dit, par extension, des Différentes régions soumises à telle ou telle température par suite de leur éloignement plus ou moins grand de l’équateur. à la différence des animaux, l’homme peut vivre sous les latitudes les plus opposées.

En termes d’Astronomie, il désigne en général l’Angle que fait, avec un plan parallèle à l’écliptique, la ligne droite qui passe par un astre et par un centre donné sur ce plan. Latitude australe. Latitude boréale. Latitude héliocentrique, géocentrique, etc. Latitude de Sirius.

LATITUDE signifiait, au propre, étendue, extension. Ce principe peut avoir une grande latitude. Donner trop de latitude à une proposition, à l’application d’un principe. De là on dit figurément, dans le sens de Liberté d’action, Laisser beaucoup de latitude aux agents chargés d’une mission.
